Johanne was 47 years old when she moved to Sweden. The reason was that she met a Swedish carpenter named Axel Svensson in 1938 and married him the next year. They never had any children together. Johanne learned to swim when she was 87 years old. She credited her longevity to good genes, eating lots of fruit and never smoking.

She travelled frequently and had been in countries such as Egypt, Israel, the Soviet Union and Holland. She became a widow in 1963. Svensson died on 29 May 2003, at the age of 111 years, 125 days. She is the oldest Danish-born woman ever.
