He played junior for the Lethbridge Native Sons and then joined the senior Trail Smoke Eaters of the Western International Hockey League (WIHL) in 1953. He would spend virtually his entire career in the WIHL. Martin won the Allan Cup in 1962 with Trail and 1970 with the Spokane Jets. Martin then turned pro with the St. Louis Blues in 1967–1968 where they made it to the Stanley Cup Finals but lost in four straight to the Montreal Canadiens. After this one season in the pros, Martin retired. He did return in 1972-73 to play a few games in Portland, Oregon and Spokane.
