The basic 26-letter Latin alphabet is the foundation of the alphabet. There are numerous digraphs and six diacritics (the caron ˇ, the acute ´, the grave `, the cedilla ¸, the circumflex ˆ, and the bar/cross) that are used to mark letter and denote other sounds. The symbols X andY aren't considered letters, but still have a purpose in the alphabet for native words.
