He played junior hockey for the Owen Sound Greys in 1938-39. In 1939-40 he played for the Atlantic City Sea Gulls and in 1940-41 turned pro for the Minneapolis Millers, leading the league with 29 goals. This caught the attention of the New York Rangers. Tustin got into 18 games for them in 1941-42, scoring 2 goals and 4 assists. The rest of that season was spent with the New Haven Eagles. Tustin spent the years 1942-1946 in the Canadian military, playing some games with the Toronto RCAF Flyers senior team.
