  • Dr. Steiner was a Coroner who first appeared in the episode The Scarlet Letter and later reappeared in the episodes Red Herring and The Red Mile. He played a prank that ended up with Steiner discovering a note placed on the body predicting Steiner's confusion about how the note got there when Jane was not seen touching the body. Jane also discovers that Steiner is sick and allows him to participate in their investigation so that he could feel useful. At the end, Steiner reveals to Jane that he knew what his disease was going to do to him and he didn't want to have to go through that so he was going to kill himself. He asked Jane to be his witness as a "law enforcement officer" so that his body wouldn't be examined in autopsy after his death. Jane hesitates at first but eventually agrees, asking Steiner for some tea while he goes and prepares himself (he has pills that he takes). As Jane and Steiner are drinking tea, Steiner asks Jane if he had an arrangement with the deputy to alert him if Steiner was going to be on the case so that he could place a fake note on the body to scare Steiner and Jane confirms his theory. Steiner's medication starts to take effect and Jane takes his mind off by performing a coin trick until he eventually dies.
