  • In his youth, he attended the Kettering grammar-school, mastering the Latin classics and learning Greek by age 11. The young scholar continued self-study in everything from logic to Hebrew. His love for Hebrew would follow Gill throughout his life. About age 12, Gill heard a sermon from his pastor, William Wallis, on the text, "And the Lord called unto Adam, and said unto him, where art thou?" (Genesis 3:9). The message stayed with Gill and eventually led to his conversion. It was not until seven years later that young John made a public profession when he was almost 19 years of age.
  • Gill once referred to Earth Starfleet Captain Jonathan Archer as "the greatest explorer of the 22nd century." (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II") In the mid-2260s, John Gill was stationed on the planet Ekos as a cultural observer. His analysis of the Ekos was that the planet was in a state of anarchy and took it upon himself to use his knowledge of history to help the local people. To this end, he created a version of Nazi Germany on the planet that was focused on social and economic renewal without the racial and/or religious persecution that marked the first Nazi State on Earth. Professor Gill provided much needed structure to the society by giving the local people the Nazis' richly symbolic culture to build on.

Jahrhunderts gewesen.

  • John Gill was a noted human historian during the 23rd century. In his work for the Federation, John Gill developed the Cultural Dynamicism Chart. (Starfleet Dynamics). Gill also described Jonathan Archer as being one of the greatest explorers of the 22nd century. (ENT episode: "In a Mirror, Darkly", Part 2) Gill wrote a book titled Small Steps and Giant Leaps: A History of Humankind in the Galaxy that was published in 2143. He also published a multi-volume series about World War III which became considered to be the definitive work on the subject by the early 24th century. Gill made it known that the he believed the peace treaty that brought the war to an end overreacted by banning genetic engineering. (ST reference: Federation: The First 150 Years) Federation: The First 150 Years gives the publication year of Gill's book as 2143 which is possibly too early to be in his lifetime. Some time in the early 2250s, Gill was an instructor of history at Starfleet Academy. Among the students who studied under him was James T. Kirk. Among the topics covered in his pre-Federation history class was the Dove Society. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky, Last Unicorn RPG module: Starfleet Academy Handbook) In 2261, Professor Gill was assigned as a cultural observer on the planet Ekos. He saw the suffering of the Ekosians, and decided to violate the Prime Directive and manage the society to mirror Nazi Germany, so that they could become more efficient, while pronouncing himself Führer. While the plan worked at first, Gill's second-in-command, Melakon drugged Gill and seized full control, and began practicing the evils that the Nazis performed on Earth in the 20th century and began torturing and murdering Zeons. When the USS Enterprise visited the planet in 2268, they discovered that Ekos was preparing to invade Zeon. Fortunately, Captain Kirk, Commander Spock and Dr. Leonard McCoy were able to revive Gill and get him to call off the invasion, and denounce Melakon. Unfortunately, Gill was shot by Melakon, before he himself was killed. Gill died soon afterwards in Kirk's arms, having admitted that he made a terrible mistake in violating the Prime Directive. (TOS episode & novelization: Patterns of Force)
In 2268, Starfleet lost all contact with Gill for several months and dispatched the starship USS Enterprise to search for him. When Captain Kirk and Commander Spock beamed down to Ekos, they were stunned to find a mid-20th century style Nazi state bent on destroying the neighboring planet, Zeon, and all the Zeons living on Ekos. Kirk and Spock were also shocked to learn that John Gill had somehow become the Führer of Ekos. When Kirk finally managed to locate Gill, the captain found his old history professor in extremely bad health. Apparently, Gill had been drugged by the Deputy Führer, Melakon. After Dr. McCoy administered several injections of a stimulant into Gill's body, Spock performed a mind meld on the historian, enabling Gill to answer Kirk's questions. Gill claimed that when he had first arrived on Ekos, he had found the planet in such a fragmented and divided state that he decided to break the Prime Directive in order to transform Ekos into a simulation of the most efficient state Earth had ever known. According to Gill, his plan had initially worked until Melakon began to drug him. As Gill's attention returned to his current situation, Kirk urged the historian to notify the Ekosians of Melakon's betrayal before the "Final Decision" to destroy Zeon began. Gill was able to transmit a message to the Ekosians and tell them to stop the invasion of Zeon. He also apologized to Zeon, insisting that he himself, not the people of Ekos, bore the blame for this aggression. He then denounced Melakon as a traitor, at which point the Deputy Führer grabbed a soldier's machine gun and shot Gill before he himself was killed by Isak. Before Gill died, he admitted to Kirk he was wrong to violate the Prime Directive. (TOS: "Patterns of Force" )
