  • A fortune cookie is a cookie that contains a slip of paper with a "fortune" (words of wisdom, aphorism, or vague prediction) written on it for whoever is eating said cookie. Although it did not originally come from China, it always appears in Chinese communities in western societies. It appeared in the Smurfs cartoon series season 9 episode “Fortune Cookie”. During the timelost Smurfs' visit to ancient China, they found a fortune cookie that fell off a peasant's cart full of them. After they learned about fortune cookies from Grandpa Smurf, Greedy Smurf decided to bake some for the others while Brainy Smurf elected himself to write the notes of fortune. However, Jokey Smurf stole Brainy’s notes at the last minute, replacing them with his own. He then prepared some "surprises" that would make it appear that the "fortunes" in the cookies for each Smurf would come true. Eventually, he succeeded in fooling the Smurfs into believing that Brainy could tell the future correctly through the notes in the fortune cookies. As the Smurfs decided to have more fortune cookies made, Jokey continued to swap Brainy's "fortunes" with his own, staging it to appear that they came true. Unfortunately, Jokey’s tricks resulted with the Smurfs becoming too reliant on the cookies and their messages. Jokey finally stopped his fortune cookie prank after it led the Smurfs into all kinds of trouble, which in turn led him to a stern lecture from Papa Smurf.
