| - To have one's name be thrice written, thrice burned was the ultimate form of dishonor in Romulan culture. Performed by the Romulan Senate, it meant that the subject was stripped of all honor and their name could never be spoken again. (TOS novel: My Enemy, My Ally, The Romulan Way) After her failure to capture the USS Enterprise in 2267, Commander Di'on Charvon was subjected to this despite pleas on her behalf by her aunt, Commander Ael t'Rllaillieu. Ael was herself thus punished in 2275 after turning on the Romulan Star Empire in alliance with the Enterprise's crew to stop an Imperial telepathy research project. Ael and her crew aboard IRW Bloodwing felt that the project, which involved the mass kidnapping and dissection of Vulcans, was dishonorable to the Empire, but were forced into exile because of their treason. (TOS novel: My Enemy, My Ally) After Ael became a leading member of the Free Rihannsu rebellion against the Star Empire in 2276, even her fellow rebels refused to speak her name. The punishment was reversed after she was crowned Empress in 2276. (TOS novel: The Empty Chair) In 2410 Praetor Velal tr'Hrienteh ordered the former Empress Sela's name thrice written and thrice burned. (Bait and Switch: "Dynamic Entry")
