abstract
| - While violence is one tactic that Palestinians have used in pursuit of their national aspirations, the Palestinian struggle has also employed non-violent measures such as peaceful protests, public relations and negotiations. Palestinian groups that have carried out or support politically-motivated violent acts have included Hamas, the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Fatah, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine - General Command (PFLP-GC), the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and the Abu Nidal Organization. Palestinian political violence has targeted Israeli Jews and supporters of Israel, but also has led to the death and injury of Palestinians and foreign citizens who did not support Israel. Israeli statistics state that 1,640 Israeli civilians have been killed and 14,000 have been wounded as a result of Palestinian violence since the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948.
