On top of its experimental uses, a shell can also function as powerful battle armor, and aid in self-repair. The major drawback of the technology is that the core robot will feel whatever pain is inflicted on the shell, sometimes even more strongly than pain inflicted on the robot itself due to the shell's organic nature. Currently the only Transformer in possession of Pretender technology is Thunderwing, who created the Pretender process.

  • Pretenders are mutant geniuses with the ability to insinuate themselves into any walk of life, to literally become anyone. Their intelligence level is such, that they can pick up a text on surgical procedures and within a week or less, be able to perform surgery without ever having gone to medical school and do it better than people who have. A Pretender could later read up on tactical procedures and become a commander of a strike force.
  • Disguise has always been a key component of Transformer operations on other worlds. Pretenders attempt to take this concept to the next level. They are a new breed of Transformer fitted with special external armor shells that can disguise their very nature as Transformers, lightyears ahead of vehicle mode. Rather than hiding themselves as the machinery or vehicles of a world, Pretender Shells can allow a robot to take on the appearance of a native lifeform itself.
  • In G1 canon, Pretenders are Transformers that have a sort of shell that goes around their form, granting them additional abilities or weapons. The robot inside is entirely hidden within the shell, though can emerge at will. The word Pretender can refer to either the shell itself or any Transformer that has one. Pretender technology had resurfaced in one of Thunderwing's secret laboratories in the form of hideous half-machine monsters (one of which strongly resembled the original octopus suit).

  • In G1 canon, Pretenders are Transformers that have a sort of shell that goes around their form, granting them additional abilities or weapons. The robot inside is entirely hidden within the shell, though can emerge at will. The word Pretender can refer to either the shell itself or any Transformer that has one. At 2k5, a Pretender TP was run around 2029 IC year in which Thunderwing and some of his cronies created Pretender shells that any Transformer could use. These powerful enhancements were eventually gained by both the Autobots and Decepticons, but were revealed to be part of a grander scheme by Thunderwing. Eventually the shells were destroyed, with the exception of two: the "Eagle" suit remained in the possession of the Autobots, and the "Octopus" suit is kept in cold storage by the Decepticons. Pretender technology had resurfaced in one of Thunderwing's secret laboratories in the form of hideous half-machine monsters (one of which strongly resembled the original octopus suit). In the year 2031, Thunderwing was back at it again.. only this time perfecting his Pretender technology. And so he set out to abduct random 'participants', more like test subjects, who fixed his predetermined profile. After having absconded with them, he forcibly merged them with his Pretender technology.. granting them access to a shell, but kept in check by his mind control. It was later revealed the big plan was to utilize the Pretenders to gain access to the 12th and final lense.. therefore giving him the power of Hytherion. Only Bumblebee, aided by Loadout, ended that scenario.. and the respective factions found a way around the Pretender programming. Pretenders that took part in the TP were introduced, but any potential Pretenders (Unlisted FC Policy) are to have been there the whole time behind the scenes.

This talent apparently has two related but distinct aspects: one is the ability to convincingly reproduce or "simulate" any experience, and correctly analyze the results, as well as feel the emotions involved; the other is the ability to learn and master any skill upon exposure, enabling Pretenders to take on any profession. Their intelligence level is such, that they can pick up a text on surgical procedures and within a week or less, be able to perform surgery without ever having gone to medical school and do it better than people who have. A Pretender could later read up on tactical procedures and become a commander of a strike force. Both the amygdala and the visual cortex of Pretenders are larger than normal. Those two regions are the pattern-matching wetware of the brain. Within Pretenders, the corpus callosum is also significantly larger than normal. This enables high-speed broadband communication between hemispheres. Their motor neuron nerve axons are much larger than normal. This gives Pretenders faster signal transmission and therefore the speed at which their brains processes information is augmented. Since Pretender gray matter is "underconnected" compared to human norms due to a relative lack of interstitial white matter; isolated cortical modules have been forced to become self-contained and hypereffective; which combined with the enlargement of the amygdala and visual cortex leads to pattern-matching and analytical skills far in excess of the human norm. Pretenders are omnisavants; their groove extends to pretty much every logical and pattern-matching dimension known to man, and more besides. Their genius is at a level normally beyond human capability and they can even do something that's neurologically impossible for everyone else, they can hold "simultaneous multiple worldviews." This allows them to instantly grasp things that to the ordinary person seems plagued by contradictions, to see things most people have to work out step-by-step. Further more, the functional efficiency of the ionotropic and metabotropic receptors of Pretenders are significantly enhanced and an increased level of a specific enzymatic output enhances the production of a broad range of neuronal proteins responsible for both short-term and long-term memory, memory capacity, and the analytical purposing of memory. Because of that, Pretenders possess an extraordinarily advanced information storage and retrieval. Their memory retention reaches a level of total recall of any information they are exposed to. This means a Pretender is not only a beyond human level genius, but also an information sponge.
On top of their exploration and infiltration uses the shells can also function as powerful battle armor, aid in self-repairs, and even function independently of their robot as a second combatant mentally controlled by their "wearer" as their reinforcement. The major drawback of the technology is that the core robot will feel whatever pain is inflicted on the shell, sometimes even more strongly than pain inflicted on the robot itself. Shells are not interchangeable; they are tailor made to fit and respond to the mental commands of their owners. Pretenders are the ultimate when it comes to taking on an organic disguise; they are by far the only Transformers to display the willingness needed to hide themselves in organic structures. The most common style of Pretender is an inner robot with a single humanoid shell (usually resembling a monster for Decepticons or a human in battle armor for Autobots, but otherwise, all Pretender shells have their own weapon, which means either the shell or the inner robot can use both their own weapon and that of the other at once).
