Ridling Thorpe Manor was a country home in rural Norfolk, England. It was the seat of the Cubitt family, who had lived in Ridling Thorpe since the early 1400s: by 1898 it was inhabited by Mr Hilton Cubitt and his American-born wife, Elsie. When mysterious pictures of dancing men began appearing around the estate and frightened Elsie, Mr Cubitt sought the assistance of Sherlock Holmes in discovering the source of his wife's distress. Holmes' investigation is recounted in "The Adventure of the Dancing Men".
