  • Gary Hart (born Gary Warren Hartpence; November 28, 1936) was the 41st President of the United States, serving from 1989-1997. Prior to the Presidency, Hart served as a Senator from Colorado (1975-1987) and was a longtime member of the Democratic Party. Hart's Presidency was noted for its focus on information technology and focusing on redeveloping American competetiveness at home and abroad, and much of his Presidency experienced a broad economic boom. In foreign policy, he oversaw the successful execution of the Persian Gulf War, the fall of the Soviet Union and the Eastern bloc, and a peaceful end to the Cold War. During his second term, Hart was hampered by an extramarital affair (allegedly one of many) and contentious showdowns with both his own party and Republicans over NAFTA, which are attributed to the 1994 Republican Revolution. His signature domestic achievements included signing NAFTA, implementing modest health care reform, and committing the US economy towards innovative technology growth.
