The two creatures turn on each other as the two lords and their respective enchanters watch from their towers. Meanwhile, Conan realizes that Andamo seeks a broken amulet as did a monk he encountered recently, but before he can do much he is captured by Ludox's men as Andamo escapes. He awakens bound and finds he would have been killed if not for the interference of the Pict Moru, who cuts Conan free. They come from underground to see the two monsttrosities still battling in a rapidly ruined city. Conan spies the amulet fragment on Lord Pollus's sorceress. Conan manages to lure the two beasts into ramming each other at high speed, fusing them together. Lord Pollus foolishly annoys his sorceress and she promptly kills him. Unfortunately, the effort of controlling the beasts causes Lord Ludox, his sorcerer Sutekh, and Zuchan the sorceress to burst into flames. Anamdo's woman, Moina, is found dead, but the Zinagaran cares only for the amulet fragments dropped by the two wizards. Conan rails at his heartlessness and makes peace with Moru, who has claimed one of the fragments as Anamdo finds the other. The three part company.
