She mostly calls women's college sports but became only the second woman to call nationally televised football games for ESPN in 2005. She and Pam Ward are the network's main female play-by-play broadcasters. Mowins was a basketball, softball and soccer player at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. She was captain of the varsity basketball team for two seasons at Lafayette College. She graduated Lafayette with a BA in 1989, and Syracuse University with a master's degree.

Mowins began her career 1991 as news and sports director for WXHC-FM Radio in Homer, NY. She is one of the inductees for the 2009 Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame. As of 2005, Mowins resides in Tampa, Florida. Mowins was paired with Cat Whitehill on ESPN's tertiary broadcast team for the telecasts of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup.
