Kirkwood's debut came in 1949, when Langhorne. Starting 19th in the field of forty-five, Kirkwood struggled through the race but still pulled out a 29th place finish. Kirkwood didn't return to the sport until 1952, but that year Kirkwood was fantastic. He started the year off with a start, winning his only career pole at the prestigious Daytona Beach Road Course and then completing every lap in the race to finish 3rd. He also added a fifth place finish at Detroit and tacked on two more top-twenty finishes in deep fields to round out the year. Kirkwood again made a multi-year absense, returning to the circuit for a three-race deal in 1956. Kirkwood again showed his talent, piloting his car into the top-twenty yet again in every start that year. This included a 3rd place run at LeHi and a 10th place run at Darlington that put Kirkwood 33rd in points. Kirkwood's final career race came in 1957, when he competed at Daytona Beach yet again. Starting 25th in the field, Kirkwood just had a respectable race to wind out his career, finishing 28th.
