Lupe worked extensively in the 1960s Civil Rights movement with Martin "Marty" Castillo, and were very close friends. Lupe wrote a special inscription in Castillo's bible with guiding words. Lupe also had a special bond with Felipe, serving as his mentor during some of his very personal issues, including that of Felipe's sexuality. In 1987, Lupe was running an AIDS hospice in the Little Havana community, much to the angst of the neighborhood, who were concerned about those with the deadly disease being so close to the children and themselves. Lupe worked extensively in the 1960s Civil Rights movement with Martin "Marty" Castillo, and were very close friends. Lupe wrote a special inscription in Castillo's bible with guiding words. Lupe also had a special bond with Felipe, serving as his mentor during some of his very personal issues, including that of Felipe's sexuality. In 1987, Lupe was running an AIDS hospice in the Little Havana community, much to the angst of the neighborhood, who were concerned about those with the deadly disease being so close to the children and themselves. Neighbors began defacing the hospice with graffiti, protesting, and other methods to voice their displeasure, but Lupe wouldn't back down, vowing to keep the hospice open with the help of Sister Katherine, a nun who helped the patients there. Lupe's brother-in-law, Jorge Cruz, did not approve of Lupe's work (pulling out of the lease on the hospice building, forcing the patients into the street) as well as his interaction with Felipe, feeling he was responsible for Felipe's life decisions, and shot Lupe dead in his home. Felipe (and Castillo) vowed to keep the hospice open after Lupe's death, and Jorge was arrested for Lupe's murder.
