The series was designed to replace The Andy Griffith Show in its time-slot on CBS, following its eighth season. "Mayberry R.F.D.", which stands for "Rural Free Delivery", was broadcast for three seasons, from September 23, 1968 to March 29, 1971. The episode plots are centered around Sam Jones, a widower, farmer and Mayberry Town Council President, and his son Mike Jones. Other recurring characters include Sam's housekeeper Aunt Bee Taylor, Goober Pyle, Howard Sprague, Emmett Clark and Clara Edwards. After Frances Bavier left the series after the second season, Alice Ghostley played Sam's cousin and housekeeper Alice Cooper. Image:O MAYBERRY RFD-1-.jpg Sam's girlfried is Millie Swanson, played by Arlene Golonka, who also played Millie Hutchins on "The Andy Griffith Show". Andy Griffith played Andy Taylor on five episodes, including the first, in which he and Helen Crump are married. Barney Fife and Opie Taylor also appear in that episode. Mayberry R.F.D.
