He is perhaps best known for his occasional role as Charlie the bartender on The Jeffersons as well as playing the role of video game character Luigi, brother of Mario's, in the live-action segments of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. He also provided the character's voice in the animation segments on the series. During the 1960s and 1970s, Wells appeared in ads for Kmart. He also appeared as a bookstore owner in Columbo episode "Forgotten Lady".
