- Cannibal Holocaust is a 1980 Italian cannibal film directed by Ruggero Deodato from a screenplay by Gianfranco Clerici, starring Carl Gabriel Yorke, Robert Kerman, Francesca Ciardi andLuca Barbareschi. Cannibal Holocaust was filmed in the Amazon Rainforest with real indigenous tribes interacting with American and Italian actors. The film tells the story of a missing documentary film crew who had gone to the Amazon to film cannibal tribes. A rescue mission, led by the New York University anthropologist Harold Monroe, recovers the film crew's lost cans of film, which an American television station wishes to broadcast. Upon viewing the reels, Monroe is appalled by the team's actions, and after learning their fate, he objects to the station's intent to air the documentary. Cannibal Holocaust is unique for its "found footage" structure, in which the gradual revelation of the recovered film's content functions similar to a flashback. The film's notion of "recovered footage" has influenced the now-popular genre of found footage horror films, such as The Blair Witch Project. Cannibal Holocaust achieved notoriety as its graphic violence aroused a great deal of controversy. After its premiere in Italy, it was seized by a local magistrate, and Deodato was arrested on obscenity charges. He was charged with making a snuff film due to rumors that claimed some actors were killed on camera. Although Deodato was later cleared, the film was banned in Italy, Australia, and several other countries due to its disturbing portrayal of graphic brutality, sexual assault, and animal violence. Some nations have since revoked the ban, but the film is still banned in several countries. Critics have suggested that the film is a commentary about civilized versus uncivilized society.

The film is a remake of the controversial original 1980 horror classic of the same name which also to a degree was presented in documentary style adn was the start of the found footage horror genre and leading cannibal horror genre. The film is distributed by Platinum Dunes and Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is slated for theatrical release on March 20, 2013. The film features a whole new variety of elements. For instance in the original film there was only the Professor Alan Yates team which descended into the Bason of the Amazon and had to undergo what they did, where as in the remake the found footage pertains to the Yates group and still going footage which parallels the story pertains to a group of 19 year old youths which have descended into the Amazon into the holiday and found themselves in the same situation as the Yates group. The film has had a lot of controversy not only public wise and studio wise but behind the scenes wise, as director Lynne Ramsay the acclaimed director of What's Your Worth and We Need To Talk About Kevin directing the remake of such a violent, gruesome horror motion picture. She had declined the project three times previously before accepting it on the behalf of wanting to try the horror genre and liking the social commentary side of the story as well as the characters and demoting into savagery. Actress Cameron Diaz who secured an Oscar for Best Actress for her role as Faye Yates originally declined twice despite the part being envisioned being portrayed by Ramsay, her reason for decline being the extreme subject matter but the character itself is the centre-line for remaining sanity, good will and balance amongst those who lowered themselves to the level of those threatening them. The film is the first real time discovered footage film to be nominated/let alone an Oscar for anything.
