He played junior hockey for the Toronto Moose, Toronto Aura Lee, and Toronto St Marys from 1920 to 1924. The next year he played for the senior Niagara Falls Cataracts. Kitchen turned pro in 1925-26 with the Montreal Maroons. In 1926-27 he started the season with the Detroit Cougars but was sent down in mid-season to the New Haven Eagles. He played the next two seasons in the Canadian Professional Hockey League and retired in 1929.
