He originally served the Red Army before joining his wife's guerilla force and participating in race liberation wars in neighboring countries, until he was eventually arrested by the Russian Army and convicted of acts of terrorism. He was then coerced into leading the U.B.C.S. in exchange for his men's freedom. In the novelization by S.D. Perry, Mikhail's injury was due to being shot by Nicholai.

Jill tells Mikhail that he has fought and earned his rest.After Jill and Carlos find the right components needed to get the trolley car moving, the three of them take a ride to the St. Michael Clock Tower. Before arriving, the cable car is attacked by Nemesis who manages to get in the posterior cable car. As Jill goes back into the second car and spots Nemesis, Mikhail, still seriously wounded, demands that she leave the cable car as he takes on Nemesis with an M4 Carbine. After running out of ammunition and being brutally beaten down by the creature, Mikhail takes a grenade from his vest and pulls the pin in an sacrificial attempt to kill the Nemesis and save Jill and Carlos. Despite his effort, the Nemesis survives the explosion and continues hunting Jill.Mikhail makes one last appearance in the extra Mercenaries mini-game after beating the game as a playable character.
