The heavy phaser cannon was a weapon designed by Starfleet to be used on large ships such as the Galaxy-class and Sovereign-class ships for heavy combat when normal phaser arrays are insufficiently powerful. This weapon is located on the bottom of a starship's saucer section. Phaser cannons work on the same principles as phasers used by Starfleet personal except on a far larger scale.

In a alternate timeline, the USS Enterprise-D was refitted to include a heavy cannon under its saucer. It was a powerful weapon more then capable to rip through the shields and hull of larger Klingon warships. (TNG: "All Good Things")
