In 2363, the Yamato finished construction at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards and was subsequently launched under the command of Captain Donald Varley. The Yamato was the second Galaxy-class starship in the line. Two years later, the Yamato encountered a probe that transmitted an Iconian computer virus. The virus ran rampant throughout the ship's systems, triggering a matter/antimatter control system failure, destroying the ship in the Romulan Neutral Zone. All hands were lost. (TNG: "Contagion") Ensign Russ Twining served aboard the Yamato as a junior engineer from 2364 to 2365. He transferred to the USS Melbourne ten days before the Yamato's destruction at Iconia.
