- While still in his twenties, Stamp achieved early recognition as the luckless title character of the 1962 film adaptation of Herman Melville's Billy Budd, and playing the male leads of 1965's The Collector and 1966's Modesty Blaise. To a whole generation of DC fans, he is General Zod to Christopher Reeve's Superman from the first two live-action movies (opposite Sarah Douglas, who played his lover, Ursa). He has become known to the next generation of viewers as Zod's archenemy, Jor-El, on Smallville.
