Hoshi Sato stole technology from Tantalus V and was able to construct a surveillance device allowing her to "neurally displace" any desired subject into a state of "non-being". Using this device, Sato was able to find the USS Defiant again and prepared to take it back to Earth to claim her throne once again. In 2260, Lieutenant James Kirk discovers the Tantalus Field while leading an expedition on a dead planet. Kirk later uses it to become captain of the ISS Enterprise, by assassinating Captain Christopher Pike. This Tantalus Field became regulatory on Terran starships during the 23rd century.

  • It was one of the secrets that Tiberius was able to gain from the First Federation representative Balok before he was killed. (TOS novel: Dark Victory) Spock took possession of the device upon his assassination of Kirk and used it to eliminate his political enemies, including a mutinous Uhura and Empress Hoshi Sato III. Spock was able to use it with more frightening efficiency, as he was able to wipe out the entire crew of a Klingon battlecruiser and a Romulan Bird-of-Prey within a year of taking control of it. These incidents - plus the "disappearance" of Uhura for plotting to mutiny against Spock lead to rumors that Spock is unleashing some previously unknown Vulcan psionic power. The Tantalus field's power fuels a rapid rise through the imperial ranks that, by 2277, culminates with his becoming Emperor of the Terran Empire. In 2293, after announcing the foundation of a Terran Republic, Spock knowing the Republic will be short lived destroys the device with a phaser to prevent another tyrant from taking possession of it. (TOS - Mirror Universe novel: The Sorrows of Empire) In 2367 of an alternate mirror universe, Jean-Luc Picard looked up Spock's history, and finds that he managed, briefly, to become a very powerful and influential figure in the Empire, largely because his enemies had a way of "disappearing" when they became too threatening. (TNG novel: Dark Mirror) See also: Siriex Apparatus, "Zapper".

The field was apparently a secret from everyone except Marlena Moreau, who revealed the the field to the primary universe version of Kirk after using it to save him, claiming that his counterpart had plundered it from the lab of an unknown alien scientist. (TOS: "Mirror, Mirror") In 2374, the tantalus field was discovered for the first time in the primary universe by Lieutenant Sara Parker in a Preserver temple on the surface of Tyra III. Parker used the device to eliminate a Jem'Hadar patrol that was threatening an group of archaeologists before also using it to transport them aboard the USS Argus in orbit and transport herself to rescue another group of captured survivors from the Seventh Fleet. A science and engineering team was later deployed from the Argus to the planets surface to study the device, when its power source started to fluctuate. The field was used one final time to evacuate the team before the power source went critical and Tantalus field was destroyed along with the rest of the temple. (Star Trek: The Adventures of Argus: "Trial By Fire")
