Between 1928 and 1972, HJK fielded a hockey department. From 1933-1947, 1948-1955, 1956-1966, and 1970-1973, the club played in the top-level SM-sarja. Their first two SM-sarja championships came in 1929 and 1932, when the league was contested in a knockout format. A third title came in 1935. HJK also finished as runners-up on six occasions, in 1931, 1933, 1938, 1939, 1941, and 1972. An additional success was a 1970 Finnish Cup victory. HJK's hockey section merged with Karhu-Kissat Helsinki in 1972 to form Helsingin Jääkiekkoklubi.
