Baldy Mountain is a 12,441 foot tall mountain located on the northwestern property of the Boy Scouts of America's Philmont Scout Ranch. Contrary to popular belief, its name is derived from its barren crest and the extensive copper and gold mining in the 19th century that killed off much of the plant life, not from being above treeline. Baldy is in fact several thousand feet below treeline. Ascent and descent can easily be accomplished in a day hike by all scouts and leaders who pass the camp's physical examination requirements. The peak also includes a time capsule, in which crew members may place an item of memorabilia or personally identifiable information, such as a patch or dog tag. The summit should be attempted before 4:00 in the afternoon, after which lightning storms may roll in at a moments notice. The ridge leading up to Baldy often contains patches of snow well into July. Located near the base of the peak is Copper Park Camp which contains water and red roof inns that summiters may use.
