Barry Oldfield was in some way involved in the retrofit of Baldwin's Casuals when the factory changed from making denim to curtains in 1988. As Mike was yet to disclose his plans to the machinists and wages clerk Emily Bishop, the sight of Barry carrying sketches caused the girls to speculate on what his business was, with Ivy Tilsley supposing that he was an engineer. As Mike showed Barry into his office, he sent Emily away to make the coffee so that they could discuss plans privately, telling her only that Barry was checking that they were making use of the available space in the factory. Mike was happy with Barry's proposals, and arranged to see him in the factory again the following week.
