Synopsis
  • Roy Jamison of the Graphic wants to learn the true identity of the leader of the Doom Patrol known only to the public as "The Chief" and sets plans in motion to try and not only capture the mystery man's image, but also learn his origins. In order to do so, he arranges to have the Doom Patrol gifted with a golden lighter during an award ceremony. Elasti-Girl accepts this gift unaware that it has a spy camera inside that will take a picture of whoever is having a cigarette lit. She unknowingly snaps a picture of the Chief and later when Jamison and his reporters confront Rita to ask her questions about the Chief, they secretly switch the lighter with a duplicate with a recording device hidden inside. When the picture of the Chief's face appears on the Graphic's front page, the Chief suspects what's going on and tells all the members of the Doom Patrol different false origin stories. The one he tells Rita is about how he is an alien from outer space that crash landed on Earth years ago and was crippled as a result. This is the story they gets out to the papers. The story reaches the ears of three individual extraterrestrial spies, operating in secret on Earth under various guises. One of them is disguised as Monsieur Duvoir, a rich, financial genius; another is government official, Senator Durham; the third is Dr. Savatini, chairman of the International Science Foundation. Believing that the story is true and feeling that the Chief may be an asset towards their secret plans of global domination, the three aliens come out of hiding and attempt to enlist his aid. When they confront the Chief, they reveal their true identities and their plot: To use special devices that will cause the Earth to heat up and dry out all it's water. They would make it look as though it was being caused by the Earth's sun and pretend to offer their aid to save the Earth and use this as leverage to take over the planet. They tell the Chief that they had buried a prototype of this device beneath a secret government project where they are testing devices to use on future missions to the Moon. The Chief "agrees" to help the aliens by sending the Doom Patrol to retrieve the device for them, really meaning to betray them and foil their plot. When the Doom Patrol breaks through the Moon Project Base's security systems and unearth the device, the aliens arrive and reveal that they suspected a double cross all along, and that the device isn't a prototype, but the real thing and activate the weapon. They try to keep the Doom Patrol at bay with their advanced weapons, however the Chief has Negative Man bring devices that make it appear that the Chief has technology more advanced than the aliens. They decide that they are ill prepared for invasion of the Earth with "another" alien around claiming a stake on the planet and flee. Robotman then uses his strength to destroy the heating device, although he succeeds his robot body is somewhat melted as a result. The Doom Patrol return to base where the Chief repairs Robotman, and commends his team for a job well done.
  • A man is hired to deliver a secret container on board his hydrofoil. The cargo is accidentally opened revealing a dangerous corrosive substance that devours metal.
