Vault is an event in men's and women's artistic gymnastics. Front handspring vaults are characterized by straight forward flight from the springboard to vault table, a handstand on the vault table, and forward repulsion or somersault off. Vaults with a full twist onto the table are also considered handsprings. Vaults with 1/2 twist (forwards or backwards) on but no somersault off are grouped with handsprings in the women's code of points but not men's. Handsprings are usually grouped with Yamashita vaults (named for the first performer), in which the gymnast pikes as he or she flies off the board without a somersault (salto).
