Synopsis
  • In Sector 3599, Kyle Rayner saves a group of small aliens from being killed by a giant insect. The aliens become clamoring around him, but Kyle doesn't understand their language. Suddenly, his ring translates their language into English, and he learns that they aren't thanking him, they're trying to warn him: "Parallax is coming..." On Earth, Hal Jordan observes an air show, when one of the planes suffers engine failure. He becomes the Spectre and saves the pilot, but the Spectre chastises him, saying that the pilot was sinless and would have been welcomed to Heaven. The Spectre more concerned with punishing a drunk driver who killed a young child. Hal refuses, saying that he is no murderer, but Hal's Parallax form appears, saying that they are murderers, and the Spectre tells them that vengeance is their mission in the Universe, which the Parallax form notes is filled with fear. Later, a spaceship flies out of the sun and crashes on Earth near an abandoned military base. Two hitchhikers are near and enter to find Kyle Rayner, unwilling to use his ring, and passes out, only saying "It has a name". At Ferris Aircraft, Carol Ferris is talking to her husband Gil on the phone. The property is still for sale, and Carol has been visiting it a lot lately. Suddenly, Carol becomes surprised when she sees one of the planes, and ends the conversation with her husband. The plane is one that used to be flown by Hal Jordan. In New York, John Stewart and Guy Gardner go to a baseball game, intending to meet with Hal Jordan. Guy doubts he'll show, saying that he's technically dead, but Hal does show. Hal tries to enjoy himself, but suddenly, people around Hal begin confessing their sins . Hal realizes that he can never rest, and leaves. After the game, the two enjoy a drink at Warriors, talking about Jordan. John still defends him, and while Guy says that Hal did a lot of terrible things, he admits that if anything had happened to Guy, Hal would have been there. Suddenly, Guy begins to loose control of his powers, and shoots John, causing the bar to explode. In Star City, Green Arrow and Speedy are preparing to go on patrol when Black Hand blasts his way into Arrow's home and enters his training room. He opens a small box containing what he was looking for--a Green Lantern Ring. Green Arrow shots Black Hand in the hand, but Hal Jordan appears. He transforms into the Spectre and causes Black Hand's hand to turn to coal and shatter. As he fades away, Hal tells Arrow that something feels wrong. Arrow picks up the ring, saying Hal gave it to him in the event of an emergency, and believes that this is one. Elsewhere, a plane flies over the remains of Coast City, seeing that the city roads, streets, and pavement has been rebuilt, along with one building. At Belle Reeve, Hector Hammond has just reduced one of his prion guards to madness, and is aware that Kyle Rayner has brought something back from his trip in space. On the Watchtower, Doctor Mid-Nite and the Martian Manhunter discover that Guy's organs are rejecting themselves. Wonder Woman, helping the Justice Society, finds that a single statue of Hal Jordan is all that survived, causing Alan Scott to become concerned that Hal will be given unfair blame. Flash and Aquaman are investigating the Coast City reports, and discover that the building is Hal Jordan's old apartment building. This is more than enough for Batman, who believes that Jordan's reform was all part of a bigger plan to acquire more power, and continues to denounce Jordan. Finally, John screams enough, and lashes out at Batman verbally, saying that Batman's disrespect of Hal was not because of anything he did, but because Hal was the "man without fear", which means that Batman has no power over him. As Superman tries to calm John down, Green Arrow arrives and explains what happened at his place. It only reinforces Batman's suspicion. At Ferris Aircraft, it has started to rain, and Carol Ferris is lost in thought by Jordan's old plane. Suddenly, the plane snaps into perfect working condition, along with the other planes and the buildings. As Carol looks around, she sees Hal Jordan.
