Mr. Pike was the unlucky captain of an oil tanker who fell victim to a bomb planted on his vessel by Cynthia Dern, an explosion which triggered the events of "Ghosts" some two decades later. Pike was permanently injured in the blast, although his financial situation was mildly alleviated by Susan Mailer, a co-conspirator of Dern's who was likewise caught and maimed in the blast, who sent money to the family each month, out of a sense of guilt. His wife, Eleanor, took the money to help pay his very considerable medical bills.
