Across this vast realm are scattered the Emperor's 196.4 million subjects, the sixth largest population of the world, but still represented a great disparity in economic, ethnic, and religious positions. Its government, ruled by the Emperor, is one of the last absolute monarchies left in Europe. Prior to the outbreak of World War I in August 1914 Russia was one of the five major Great Powers of Europe. Few men have had such a massive effect on the history of the 20th century, as Tsar Alexei II of Russia. Not only did he restore the Russian monarchy, after the rule of the communists, he also reinvigorated the Russian Empire and allowed it to become one of the dominant forces on the European continent, with the isolated German Reich it's only rival. Despite his achievements, the Tsar suffered an early death due to chronic hemophilia on April 12th 1946, but with the peace of the world assured.
