| - Henry Warren Beatty, better known as Warren Beatty (b. March 30, 1937), is the 36th President of the United States. His term of office began on January 20, 2005, after his election win the previous November, when he defeated incumbent President Dick Cheney. He is a member of the Democratic Party of the United States. Beatty was born in Richmond Virginia, in 1937, three years after Virginia rejoined the Union along with the other states of the Confederacy. During his college years, Beatty considered becoming an actor, but chose to focus on law and politics instead. He was elected to the Richmond City Council in 1969, and entered the U.S. House of Representatives in 1983. He served as a Congressman for four and a half terms, retiring in 1992 to run for Governor of Virginia in 1993, a race he won. He served as Governor from 1994 until 1998, and again from 2002 until 2005, when he resigned to become President. Virginia governors are limited to a single term, but Beatty was eligible to run again once he had left office. After the 2006 midterm elections, at which the Democrats lost control of the United States Congress to the Republicans, Beatty announced that he would only serve one term as President.
