Elephants birds are members of the extinct family Aepyornithidae.
The name "Elephant Bird" is the result of a mistranslation, similar to Varia Suit. The Japanese name for this creature is simply 鳥人像 "Chōjin-zō", meaning "Birdman Statue" or, as commonly translated, Chozo Statue. However, "Zō" also means "elephant" in Japanese, with a similar kanji, 象.
The elephant bird was a huge bird with green plumage and a yellowish beak. Their screams could often be heard when traveling in the jungles of Zakhara. Usually these birds traveled in groups of two or three, but they were rarely separated from their flock. Anyone who dared to attack them recognized their strength soon after.
