  • CHAMPAGNE, Claire Siobhan, was born on November 20, 1969, in Paradise, NL, to Clément Champagne and Margaret Elizabeth (née Mercer). Her father operated a ferry boat between Miquelon and Fortune, NL, where he met her mother. As a result, Claire is holds dual citizenship from both Canada and France. Claire graduated from Holy Heart of Mary High School in St. John's, and began her studies at Memorial University. She then took a year to study in France, and returned to MUN to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Communications in 1990. She was hired as a radio host upon graduation, then quickly moved to CJON-TV (also known as NTV), where she was noticed by The Weather Network. She also worked for the Chamber of Commerce for St. John's, where also actively involved in strengthening ties between St. Pierre-Miquelon and Canada. As a result of her efforts, a flight connecting Miquelon and St. John's was established in 1997. Claire ran and narrowly won her seat in the May 2000 by-election to replace Charles Power, and significantly widened her margin of victory later in later that year in the November general election. Claire never married, and her interests include gourmet cooking, theatre, Classical, Celtic and folk music, history, anthropology and genealogy. She currently resides in St. John's with her golden lab, Topaze.
