The 77th Emperor's Cup was a sumo competition held sometime prior to 2371. The contest featured a match between two opponents, Takashi and Kar-pek. Kathryn Janeway, who had a fifth row seat at the contest, would later recall that Takashi forced Kar-pek out of the circle in less than three seconds. Chakotay and Tuvok, who were also avid sumo fans, disagreed, stating that Takashi had actually lost the match because his knee broke the sand. Chakotay teased that he thought that perhaps she might have been ordering sake at the time and missed the decision, however, Janeway continued to swear she was correct and feared that she might be facing a mutiny.
