- Black equipment, in het Nederlands Zwarte uitrusting, bestaat uit wapens en armour dat sterker zijn dan steel equipment, maar zwakker dan mithril equipment. Black equipment is even sterk als zijn tegenhanger, het white equipment, hoewel white equipment enkel voor members is en een kleine prayer bonus geeft. Black equipment daarentegen is beschikbaar voor free spelers. In een Postbag from the Hedge werd gezegd dat zowel black en white equipment gemaakt zijn van een gekleurde vorm van steel, die verkregen wordt door speciale technieken bij het smeden. Spelers kunnen echter noch black noch white equipment maken met de Smithing skill.

- Black equipment are items made from black metal. Black equipment is stronger than steel equipment, yet weaker than mithril equipment. As their name suggests, the equipment is black in colour. Black armour requires 10 Defence to wield, weapons require 10 Attack. Black equipment is almost identical to white equipment, unlocked after the Wanted! quest, however white equipment is member's only and has a slight Prayer bonus. Black items cannot be smithed.
- Black equipment is weaker than Mithril, but stronger than Steel. Black armour and weapons require level 10 in Defense and Attack respectively to wield. Black is unique among the equipment types, as there is no way to smith it. Black equipment is available only from monster drops, and from some shops, though some black items (such as the black pickaxe) do not exist. Due to this, some other black items were often mistakenly considered 'rare' when in fact obtainable through drops. Another mistaken assumption made among newcomers was that Black armour was made through smithing coal.
