As Roland and the rest of the ka-tet post riddle after riddle to the AI, Eddie spends his time lost in his memories, trying to recover the clue to defeat the AI's riddling prowess. After digging painfully at his past memories, he finally remembers a conversation in the previous book where Roland grew offended at his stupid jokes, because of his literal mindedness. He also remembers that Blaine froze up on an early riddle, "What has four wheels and flies?" "The town garbage wagon." With a few minutes left, Eddie begins to hurl lame joke after lame joke at the AI, that could not be refused, as it was stupidity Blane complained of, not transgression of the rules. Between the volleys of bad jokes, and eventually the volley of lead, Eddie destroys Blaine, just in time to cause the Mono to stop with a hard but survivable crash.
