He turned pro in 1967-68 with the Houston Apollos but remained buried in the Canadiens' system until 1970. He was then chosen by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1970 NHL Expansion Draft. He made his NHL debut in 1970-71 with the Canucks but split the season with the Rochester Americans. He played a full NHL season in 1971-72 but posted a Plus/minus of -29. The New York Islanders chose him in the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft but Schella chose instead to join the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association (WHA). He played five seasons for the Aeros, helping them win the Avco World Trophy in 1974-75. He spent one season in the minor pros in 1978-79 and then retired. In the NHL Schella played in 115 games and scored 2 goals and 18 assists. In the WHA he scored 39 goals and 143 assists in 385 regular season games. In the WHA playoffs he played in 66 goals, scoring 4 goals and 25 assists.
