McMahon played junior hockey for the Guelph Biltmores and the Guelph Royals from 1959 to 1962. His rights belonged to the New York Rangers since the junior teams were Rangers' farm teams. From 1962 to 1966 he played 60 games for the NHL Rangers (scoring 13 assists) but spent the bulk of his time in the minor leagues. The Montreal Canadiens accquired him in 1966 and he spent 1966-67 with the Houston Apollos. THe following year he was traded to the Minnesota North Stars and McMahon played what would be his only full NHL season in 1967-68. His father, Mike Sr. also played in the NHL.
