He played junior hockey for the Barrie Flyers (a Boston Bruins' farm team) from 1945 to 1948. He turned pro in 1948-49 with the Buffalo Bisons and the Houston Huskies and spent five years in the minor pros. Gariepy got called up to the Bruins in 1953-54 and played 35 games for them that season. The next season he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for whom he only played one game. He left pro hockey in 1956 to play senior for the Owen Sound Mercurys (1956–57) and the Chatham Maroons (1957–58). He retired in 1958. In his 36 NHL games Gariepy scored a goal and six assists.
