  • Serotonin is a monoamine neurotransmitter that is synthesized in the central nervous system and can also be found in the gastrointestinal trat and platelets of the animals and humans. It's known that in the CNS, it has an important role as neurotransmiter, taking part in the inhibition of anger, the unhibition of agreetion, body temperature, sleep, vomiting, sexuality and appetite. The antidepressant drugs can alter levels of serotonin. In the episode Distractions, the medical case is related with the antidepressants and the serotonin.

Serotonergika) beschrieben. (ENT: "Singularity") One of the effects of the Ktarian game was increased serotonin production, generating a feeling of euphoria that added to its addictive properties. (TNG: "The Game" ) Tampering by solanogen-based lifeforms caused elevated levels of serotonin to concentrate in the hippocampus of several crewmembers of the USS Enterprise-D. Doctor Beverly Crusher realized that this was caused by a neuro-sedative used by the aliens to sedate the victims of their experiments. (TNG: "Schisms" ) Tom Paris exhibited elevated serotonin levels in his hypothalamus after his transwarp flight in 2372. (VOY: "Threshold") Ensign Vorik had elevated serotonin levels during pon farr in 2373. (VOY: "Blood Fever") In 2374 The Doctor found that Kes' serotonin levels were 62% above normal, which accounted for her sleeping less and experiencing a lot of energy. (VOY: "The Gift") In 2375, The Doctor found that Seven of Nine's serotonin levels were low during a regeneration cycle. He described this as normal and thus it did not account for interruptions in the cycle. (VOY: "Infinite Regress") In 2379, Dr. Crusher found that Deanna Troi's serotonin levels were slightly elevated after a telepathic attack by the Reman Reman Viceroy. (Star Trek Nemesis)

These studies show that serotonin not only acts as an autocrine/ paracrine mode, it also has the potential to regulate body functions in an endocrine fashion, like in the case of entero-bone endocrine axis. Isolated and named in 1948 by Maurice M. Rapport, the name "serotonin" is something of a misnomer and reflects the circumstances of the compound's discovery. It was initially identified as a vasoconstrictor substance in blood serum - hence serotonin, a serum agent affecting vascular tone. This agent was later chemically identified as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) by Rapport, and, as the broad range of physiological roles were elucidated, 5-HT became the preferred name in the pharmacological field.
