François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture was the historical leader of the Haitian Revolution which ended slavery on the island of Santo Domingo (Hispaniola), and triggered the end of slavery throughout the new world. Hornblower mentioned Toussaint when discussing the invasion of the gun batteries at Scotchman's Bay with Buckland and Bush.
