Holding the rank of Vice Admiral of the Red, he served as the commanding officer of Task Force Basilisk. His flagship at the time was the superdreadnought HMS King William. Markham disliked the bureaucratic work he had to do most of the time at Basilisk. In 1913 PD, the People's Navy's Twelfth Fleet attacked the system as part of Operation Icarus. Markham's force engaged the enemy while the Manticoran personnel from the installations orbiting the planet Medusa were evacuated. He was able to destroy several enemy ships in the opening fight of what would become known as the Second Battle of Basilisk, but was outnumbered and outgunned; he died along with all his men when the Havenites destroyed his entire force.
