- Farley was born in Madison, Wisconsin. He has three brothers, and a sister. His parents were Mary Anne and Thomas, Sr, who owned an oil company. Farley played football in his high school life, and graduated from Edgewood High School. He also attended La Lumiere School, after a suspension from Edgewood for one year. He then went on to graduate from Marquette University, in 1986, with a concentration in communications and Theater. He often spent his summers as a camp counseler, outside of Minocqua, Wisconsin. After Minocqua, he would work for his father at his oil company.

In the January 11, 1997 All That episode with musical guest Mint Condition, he appeared in a "Cooking with Randy" sketch as guest chef Chef Farley. Nine and a half months later and six weeks before his death, he hosted SNL for the first (and last) time since leaving. This makes him the only SNL castmember to appear on All That, and the first to do so in the same year.
