Niche was the nezumi term which designated the Nezumi Caste system. This term translated as "One's-Important-Place-in-the-World-and-How-One-Fills-It." Every Ratling has a Niche, whether it was Hunter, scrounger, Rememberer, or chief. Higher Niche bestowed more responsibilities, a concept not all Nezumi found desirable. Nezumi who tended to get themselves into trouble from excessive ambition were said to "have climbed into a Niche," or were "a Niche too high for their tail," implying they had climbed so high that a single mistake could make them fall.
