The plot revolves around two sisters, Nise and Finea, the daughters of the modest hidalgo Otavio that are now of marrying age. Nise is an intellectual in a secret relationship with a poet, Laurencio, but her dowry is poor, while Finea has a greater dowry and is to marry the ladies' man Liseo. When Liseo meets Finea, however, he discovers that the greater dowry is to make up for her stupidity and proposes Laurencio to switch their engagements. Laurencio, who is poor, agrees, to Nise's anger. But as a result of Laurencio's courtship, Finea falls in love with him and this makes her decide to cultivate her own intellect. Learning that Finea is now smart and rich, Liseo demands to go back to their original engagements, and Finea has to play dumb to dissuade him. In the end, Liseo marries Nise,
