  • Ie was the Rokugani term for "household". It often included branch families under the authority of the main family, as well as distant relations and persons unrelated. The father had absolute authority over the members of the family, and the eldest son became the family head when the father retired or died. If there was no son, a daughter would be married to a man who was adopted into the family to become its leader. The eldest son and his wife lived with his parents to care for them and inherit the family property or business. Obedience to and respect for parents was a basic principle of the society.
