Astrogation is the process of monitoring and controlling the movement of a ship from one place to another in space. It is also the term of art used for the specialized knowledge used by astrogators to perform astrogation tasks. All astrogational techniques involve locating the astrogator's position compared to known locations or patterns.

  • Astrogation is the planning of a route through space and the actual navigation of spacecraft, either in interplanetary travel or in interstellar travel. Usually, the term is applied to the coordination of slipstream space jumps. While most other operations can be performed by a human pilot, astrogation of slipspace jumps requires a navigation computer or a shipboard artificial intelligence.
  • Time Taken: One minute when your position is known and you are following a commonly-travelled jump route for which hyperspace coordinates have already been calculated (can be reduced to one round in emergencies). A few hours when your position is known, but your destination is one to which you have not travelled before and the nav computer must calculate coordinates. One day when you must take readings to determine your ship's current position and then compute hyperspace coordinates. Specializations: Specific trade route — Kessel Run, Tatooine to Coruscant, Corellian Run Trade Route.
